Musings – The Anniversary Issue!!!!
Well, its been a whole year since I deleted my social media accounts and started this little monthly newsletter/blog (if you want to read more about why I made this choice, here’s a link to the inaugural post). I’m happy to say I have survived, and I don’t miss social media at all. I’ve gotten lots of positive feedback from people who read my monthly musings, and it feels like I’m being much more genuine and true to myself with this format. Quite a few people have told me how they wish they could leave social media (you can!!!)
May is also the month I got married to my husband Jeff. The exact date depends on how you look at things.
Jeff and I met in Oregon and had been together for quite a few years. We talked occasionally about getting hitched, but neither of us felt any urgency…I think its safe to say we both felt like we were already married even though it wasn’t legal. Then, the pandemic started. With all the uncertainty that brought, we decided it was important to seal the deal.
I emailed my friend and bandmate Chipper Thompson, who also happens to be ordained through the Universal Life Church, to ask him if we could figure something out. I was thinking maybe a Zoom meeting at my mom’s house because she had good internet, and she’d be sad if she wasn’t part of it.
He didn’t email me back, but the next day (May 1) I was outside doing horse chores and heard someone hollering through our front gate. I went to see who it was, and it was Chipper and his wife Kim. They have a piece of property at the top of our road, and stopped by on their way up. Jeff and I went out to the driveway to talk to them, all of us careful to keep our 6 feet of social distance.
I asked Chipper if he got my email and he said he had. We started talking about different scenarios. Then, with his slight Alabama accent, he said “Well hell, let’s just to it right now! Do you?” he was looking at me.
“Uh, yes?”
“Do you?” this time looking at Jeff.
“Okay…”
“You are!” Chipper exclaimed.
Jeff and I looked at each other, both a little stunned. Then I adjusted my hat and ran to turn off the hose that was filling the water trough. And that was that.
A few days later, on May 6, we went to the county courthouse and got our marriage license. We went to my mom’s house on Mother’s day, which I think was May 10 that year, and got her to sign as a witness. Then a couple of days later, on May 14, we went to Kim and Chip’s house so Kim could sign as a witness and Chipper could sign as the officiant. That same day we took the signed certificate back to the courthouse.
So you can see why the exact date of our wedding anniversary is a little ambiguous. But I have to say, if you’re considering a driveway wedding I highly recommend it. No stress and a good story.
