Musings – Reading
If you ever make it to the end of my little newsletter and have seen my list of recent reads, you know I read a lot. Full disclosure, a couple of the titles in a given month are audiobooks…I have to drive 1/2 hour to town several times a week and have found it a much more pleasant experience with someone reading to me. I should also say I’m not necessarily recommending the books on my monthly list, but for the most part I enjoyed them (there have been a few that were so bad that I didn’t include them on the list).
According to my mom, I taught myself to read when I was 3 by watching Sesame Street and The Electric Company. My brother and I had lots of books, and my mom took us to the library on a regular basis. I remember coming home each week with an armload of books and devouring them. In elementary school I made it a regular practice to climb up on the desk next to the refrigerator where my parents kept a flashlight. I’d sneak the light into my room and read under the covers well past my bedtime.
I temporarily lost my passion for books in adolescence and young adulthood, being more interested in watching TV, hanging out with my friends, and listening to music. I’m pretty sure I somehow avoided most of the assigned reading in high school and college and somehow faked my way through all the tests.
But my love of reading came back. I haven’t had a television for most of my adult life and have usually had a book going. I taught English at an alternative high school in Portland for a few years and did my best to get my students excited about reading too. I got a job at a library at the end of the pandemic and that ignited the passion for reading in a whole new way. I was surrounded by books, talked to other people about books, and researched titles to add to the collection.
These days I have 1-2 physical books and an audiobook going. I read more fiction than non-fiction but I love both. I read with coffee in the morning and before going to sleep at night. I listen while driving and doing house chores and sometimes while knitting. Books make excellent companions, in my opinion.
If you have any book recommendations, please let me know!!!
