Musings – On Aging

November is my birthday month…this year I’m turning 55 (!!!!!!!).

I’m not much of one for celebrating. My mom takes me out to lunch someplace where we can get carrot cake for dessert and that’s about it. I do tend to get reflective around my birthday though, and perhaps a little melancholy.

This last year has marked a turning point for me physically…I’m starting to feel the aging process in my body like I haven’t before. I’m having some fairly significant hand issues that could potentially affect everything I love to do. It seems I have taken my hands, and their functionality, for granted my whole life. Not any more. I have an achy hip and have noticed my previously perfect eyesight starting to falter. Oh yeah, I also had to have dental work done this year for the first time in my life.

Luckily, with age comes wisdom, as they say. In the past I would have been reluctant to seek help, but I am at least wise enough to know I can’t fix all this stuff by myself. There are some very talented healers with knowledge and expertise that I simply don’t have. Never mind most of them are at least 15 years younger than I am.

My mom has had some very serious health issues arise this year, and the experience of helping her these last few months has me absolutely determined to take good care of myself as I age so I can hopefully avoid much of what she is going through now. I know we can’t control for everything, but I am going to do everything I can to increase the odds that I can still play music and go for walks and knit and read books and do all the other things I love for as long as I’m on this planet.

~If you like carrot cake (I LOVE carrot cake) this place has the best I’ve found in Northern New Mexico…or anywhere, really.

~recent reads – Intermezzo by Sally Rooney, Truth and Beauty: A Friendship by Ann Patchett, James by Percival Everett, Don’t Be a Stranger by Susan Minot, The Women by Kristin Hannah, Hoof Beats: How Horses Shaped Human History by William Taylor, Bear by Julia Phillips, Sacrificial Animals by Kailee Pederson

~hot off the needles:

Green Giant by JVK Knits (it was supposed to be a hat but I ran out of yarn so it became a cowl)

~The Shift Cowl by Andrea Mowry (my first attempt at colorwork!)

Thank you for taking the time to read my ramblings! Take good care of yourselves!

    Happy Birthday to you!

And thanks for the Sugar Nymphs Bistro recommendation! I still haven’t been yet, but I plan to get there soon for some carrot cake!

    • love your ramblings. At 64 ( will you still need me, will you still feed me) I’m definitely feeling the aging in my body. Sobering. Youth is wasted on the young, someone said. Ha!

Hand tremors have impaired my guitar playing at age 68. It’s not uncommon. I don’t have a solution other than writing a song about it 🙂

Great to get the Sugar Nymphs recommendation! Carrot cake is also Martin’s favorite 🤩

Always looking for a good book so also appreciate your book suggestions! Did you really read all those last month?!?

    And HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

I have recently been doing a core balancing program online that has stopped my left hip from clicking, my toes less numb and my right hand less tingling. Also lower back has less pain!

Corebalancetraining.com. You can get a free week to try it out…highly recommended it.

    All good wishes

I read most of those books but also listened to a couple of them… since I have to make the drive to town so often I started listening to audiobooks.
Thanks for the core balancing suggestion…I’ll check it out!
