Musings – On Aging

November is my birthday month…this year I’m turning 55 (!!!!!!!).
I’m not much of one for celebrating. My mom takes me out to lunch someplace where we can get carrot cake for dessert and that’s about it. I do tend to get reflective around my birthday though, and perhaps a little melancholy.
This last year has marked a turning point for me physically…I’m starting to feel the aging process in my body like I haven’t before. I’m having some fairly significant hand issues that could potentially affect everything I love to do. It seems I have taken my hands, and their functionality, for granted my whole life. Not any more. I have an achy hip and have noticed my previously perfect eyesight starting to falter. Oh yeah, I also had to have dental work done this year for the first time in my life.
Luckily, with age comes wisdom, as they say. In the past I would have been reluctant to seek help, but I am at least wise enough to know I can’t fix all this stuff by myself. There are some very talented healers with knowledge and expertise that I simply don’t have. Never mind most of them are at least 15 years younger than I am.
My mom has had some very serious health issues arise this year, and the experience of helping her these last few months has me absolutely determined to take good care of myself as I age so I can hopefully avoid much of what she is going through now. I know we can’t control for everything, but I am going to do everything I can to increase the odds that I can still play music and go for walks and knit and read books and do all the other things I love for as long as I’m on this planet.
